SOUNDTRACK OF A NIGHT
The story behind each track on my first album, an electronic journey through the night.
MOON (feat. Lux Montes)
I remember finishing the first sketch of this track and sending it to my friend Lux Montes to see what she might hear in it. By the next day, she had sent back vocals that fit perfectly. I finished the track almost immediately, and it became one of my favorites on the album.
MISERY
My best friend once sent me a collection of samples, and one of them became the starting point for Misery. There is something powerful and almost euphoric about the track. Whenever the tension builds and the drop arrives, I imagine it playing on a huge stage in front of a packed crowd.
HEAT (feat. Lux Montes)
The title came from two places. The atmosphere makes me think of a warm, humid jungle at night, while Lux Montes' vocals add something almost hypnotic, like being surrounded by a wave of heat. It also reminds me of Heat by Michael Mann, one of my favorite films, where the night has such a strong presence.
KYOTO (cuts by Mr Viktor)
Kyoto was one of the biggest surprises of a 40 day trip through Japan in 2012, and this track carries fragments of that journey. Many of the sounds are recordings I made there, from a monk during a temple ritual to the sound of a pedestrian crossing. Mr Viktor added the scratches, and my friends at 128db helped bring the track to life in its music video.
NEIL MCCAULEY (interlude)
Being a big fan of Michael Mann's Heat, I imagined this interlude almost like a fragment of a film soundtrack. Voices from the movie naturally found their way into its atmosphere, partly inspired by the way DJ Shadow used voice samples from the film in Stem. The title comes from Neil McCauley, Robert De Niro's character in the film.
APOLLO 85
I've always been fascinated by the universe and our place within it. When I came across a collection of NASA samples, it felt like the perfect opportunity to build something around them. The 85 is simply the year I was born.
ENCELADE
After Apollo 85 takes you into space, Encelade goes a little further. I imagined being alone in a spacecraft, surrounded by something immense and beautiful, with nothing to do but let go and float until the end of the track. The title came from Encelade, one of Saturn’s moons.
ELLEBORE
Ellebore takes its name from a plant once used as a cure for madness. The track plays with that idea: its recurring rises can feel almost overwhelming, while the quieter moments in between become deep, minimal and strangely soothing.
JRP (feat. Lux Montes)
JRP originally stood for Japan Rail Pass, something I used while travelling through Japan. The track has always made me think of a train journey, filled with sounds recorded there. Lux Montes brings a human dimension to it, gradually turning that journey into something closer to a love declaration in motion.
EQUINOX (bonus track)
I made this track years ago, when my artist name was Knuckles. Bringing it back felt like the perfect way to close the album, while also saying a final goodbye to that earlier project.
